* A Plumbing Story

Posted on October 28th, 2008 by admin. Filed under necessary information.

There has been a lot of construction around our office lately. Washington Street has been dug up a number of times, buildings have been torn down and new ones built in their place – there has been a lot of activity here in the Washington Street Extension neighborhood of Nantucket. This neighborhood is built on fill, so the heavy equipment would cause the neighborhood to vibrate. One of my neighbors had two of his picture windows crack from the vibration.

I opened my water bill the other day, luckily on the day it arrived, and noticed my water bill had shot up – showing high usage in the off-season. I called the Wannacomet Water Co, one of our island’s water companies, and asked them to check for a leak. They later called back and confirmed that I did have a leak.

Wannacomet personnel came to the property along with my plumber, Bill Sarnie, and they were unable to locate the leak using listening devices. So…….it was up to Bill to find it in over two hundred feet of buried waterline. He guessed that it would be close to the street, due to all the construction that had been going on, and sure enough, he located it on the morning of the first day of digging. The job took a day when it could have taken two. Thanks Bill!

When the water was turned back on, I noticed that there was some grit in it initially and then all the toilets began to run. When I lifted up the lid in the tank, I saw a new mechanism that I wasn’t familiar with. After messing with it I realized that I needed some outside expertise, or I could do some damage. So once again I called Bill.

Thought the following video information would be useful so I post this today:

* Twelve Similar Greek Revival Homes in Nantucket Town

Posted on October 25th, 2008 by admin. Filed under Houses on Nantucket.

An interesting property on Center Street was featured this week at an open house for brokers. It is a Greek Revival home that was built in the 1840′s. There is an house right next door that is its twin. The property is mentioned in Clay Lancaster’s book, Architecture of Historic Nantucket, and is one of twelve similar Greek Revival houses on Nantucket. Presently there are two more houses of the same style listed for sale: one is on Gay Street and one is on Union Street (which is listed by Chatfield-Taylor Real Estate).

The Center Street Greek Revival has it’s identical twin right next door (which is not for sale). The house on Center Street has been well used over the years in a variety of ways: It has been a private house, a guest house and now is two apartments. There is a small one story cottage out back which appears to have been built in the 60′s or 70′s. The back cottage has been leased to a nearby guest house over the years for overflow guests.

The main house needs a total renovation. It still has the original front hall stair which is remarkably similar to the front hall stair in Union Street. Otherwise the original detail in the Center Street house seems to be pretty much gone.The house and cottage is for sale for $1,595,000. The lot size is 3775 sq.ft. There is no off-street parking.

Below you can see the house on Union Street. The original main house is very similar in size, and has a front stair that is very similar. This property was extensively renovated in 1999, with all new systems and a new back wing containing the kitchen and Master Bedroom. The house retains much of its original detail – floors, arched secondfloor windows, doors, and the original floor plan. The owners use several of the fireplaces on a regular basis. There is also a two bedroom cottage in the rear of this property that was constructed in 2002 as an office and then finished as a fully equipped residential cottage in 2005. There are approved HDC plans for an addition to this cottage, which will expand it to a three bedroom 2 bath house with fireplace. This could serve as a residence on its own, in its own private world. There are outdoor showers with each house.
